"One of the most important books written during the Cambodian War"
-Elizabeth Becker
In late 1973 and early 1974, Phnom Penh was abuzz over the publication of a short but timely memoir by a relatively unknown figure, Ith Sarin. Urban Cambodians and foreign Cambodia watchers alike knew little about the mystery-shrouded band of communist revolutionaries closing in on the capital. For the first time, Sarin’s memoir offered inside details of the Khmer Rouge from someone who had joined their ranks and then rallied back to the government in Phnom Penh to tell all. Meant as a warning against impending communism, it punctured myths and proved to be a prescient and sober warning of what lay ahead.
